About
more than 30 years of experience in the areas of regulatory compliance, risk management, and corporate investigations with a special focus on Latin America & the Caribbean. He is responsible for managing the firm’s clients, leading the growth strategy including marketing efforts, overseeing the team of advisers, investigators, analysts, and providing project oversight, quality control and risk management advisory on behalf of corporate, legal and financial decision-makers.
Mr. de la Portilla is a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) and has assisted many financial institutions in the region with issues pertaining to customer due diligence, evaluations of foreign correspondent banking relationships, and testing of anti-money laundering (AML) controls, pursuant to U.S. financial, economic, and commercial sanction regulations including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act and OFAC.
His extensive work experience has included supporting projects for Fortune 500 companies in the areas of internal corporate investigations, reviews of corrupt practices and irregularities, risk analysis of mergers & acquisition targets, background investigations of potential business partners and associates, financial fraud, employee theft, litigation defense, pre-litigation and post-judgment global asset searches, and other legal support matters in preparation for civil and criminal claims against adverse parties.
Previously he served as Regional Managing Director for the Latin American office of U.S. based consultancy, IPSA International where he led BSA/AML compliance investigations for both nationally and state-regulated financial organizations in the U.S., managed large-scale remediation projects, supervised anti-money laundering lookback projects, and assisted the boards of directors and executive management teams with improving compliance deficiencies and validating of corrective actions connected to credit card processing agencies, pre-paid card distributors, foreign correspondent banks, transaction monitoring solutions, OFAC procedures, and AML risk assessments.
Mr. de la Portilla began his career with the global risk management company Kroll, Inc. where he managed the Latin American region’s investigative analyst unit and supported a variety of complex due diligence and risk assessment matters relating to corporate transactions, privatizations, and investigations in Latin America. In 1996, he relocated to São Paulo, Brazil to supervise the company’s first office in the region.
He has written and presented on topics relating to emerging risks,financial crime, OFAC, anti-money laundering, artficial intelligence in the banking sector, sanction risk, KYC and EDD in Latin America, and high-risk jurisdictions and has spoken at various conferences as a subject-matter expert including the FIBA AML Conference (Miami), Congreso Hemisferico (Panama), and CLADIT (Guatemala). He is also the host of the Integro Talks podcast, a monthly series featuring discussions with thought leaders and stakeholders on emerging risks, compliance, and regulations affecting businesses and markets.
Mr. de la Portilla is a former Board member of the Financial & International Busi-ness Association (FIBA). He is a member of the Association of Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS), Association of Certfied Fraud Examiners (ACFE), Businesses for Social Responsibility (BSR), Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA), Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE), the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP), and the Miami Fintech Club
